Bulls Claim Cornell Invitational The University at Buffalo volleyball team won its second straight tournament title of the season this past weekend as they swept their three matches at the Cornell Invitational. The week started with a narrow 3-2 loss to Syracuse before UB went to Cornell and won 3-0 decisions against St. John’s, Colgate and the host Big Red. The nine wins for the Bulls prior to conference play are their most victories before MAC play since 2006. Silvers Named Tournament MVP, Schlegel To All-Tourny Team Senior Dani Silvers continued her impressive 2009 season as she was named the Most Valuable Player at the Cornell Invitational. Silvers had 49 kills on the week, including 31 kills in just nine sets at the Tournament. Junior Lindsey Schlegel was also named to the All-Tournament team as she recorded 97 assists on the weekend in just nine sets. Schlegel also recorded four service aces in the tournament opener against St. John’s.
Hornbaker Hits Career High Junior Marisa Hornbaker netted a new career high in kills this past week as she recorded 22 against Syracuse. Hornbaker finished tops on the team with 50 kills this past week and is currently second on the team with 116 kills on the year. Hornbaker is on pace to surpass her career-high for kills in a season. Block Party The Bulls had one of their best blocking weeks this past week as the Bulls had 38 total team blocks. Junior Kristin Bignell had 23 total blocks, including three solos, while sophomore Abby Niekamp added 18 total blocks. Redshirt junior Kelsey Lueders added 17 total blocks, including one solo.
Up Next The Bulls begin Mid-American Conference play this weekend as they head to Miami (OH) and Bowling Green. The Bulls face the RedHawks on Friday at 7:00 pm and then the Falcons at 3:00 pm on Saturday.
