The University at Buffalo volleyball team put forth a good showing at the West Virginia Classic over the weekend, posting a 2-1 record to place second among the four teams. The Bulls rebounded from a tough 3-2 loss (30-26, 25-30, 30-22, 22-30, 15-11) to the host Mountaineers on Friday to earn identical 3-1 wins over Memphis (30-28, 30-15, 21-30, 30-23) and Duquesne (30-28, 19-30, 39-37, 30-24) on Saturday. Senior Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) and junior Lauren Burd (York, PA/Central York) both represented Buffalo on the All-Tournament Team. Brown averaged 11.00 assists and 2.77 digs while also adding 10 kills in the Bulls' three matches, while Burd averaged 2.69 kills with a team-high .329 hitting percentage and 1.08 blocks. Burd had a match-high eight blocks against West Virginia, tying her career high. She also tied her career high with 12 kills against both Memphis and Duquesne.

Other notable individual performances at the tournament included a match-high 24 kills - just one shy of her career high - by junior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) against Duquesne and a match-high nine blocks by senior Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) against Memphis.

Bulls Beat Niagara, 3-1

Earlier in the week, the Bulls snapped Niagara's five-match win streak with a come-from-behind 3-1 victory (28-30, 30-25, 30-23, 30-23) over the Purple Eagles in Alumni Arena. The Bulls had four players in double digits in kills, including two with double-doubles in kills and digs. Morzenti led the Bulls with a team-high 16 kills and 11 digs, and junior Jenna Mapé (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) also posted a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs. Weekley finished with 11 kills, four service aces and a match-high eight blocks, and Burd added 11 kills and four blocks. Brown recorded 45 assists and 12 digs, and sophomore Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) had a team-high 16 digs.

Blocking Up a Storm

Weekley has recorded 38 blocks in the Bulls' last five matches - an average of 1.81 blocks per game - to raise her season average to 1.50 blocks per game. Weekley currently has 475 career blocks, ranking her third all-time in UB volleyball history. Only two other players have reached the 500 mark in career blocks (Kathy Brinkworth, 662, 1994-97 and Candi Sims, 510, 1993-96).
