Bulls Defeat Canisius, Fall At Cornell Invitational With a victory against cross-town rival Canisius last Tuesday the Bulls set a Division I school record for consecutive wins with 10. However, the 10 wins is all the Bulls would accumulate as they ran into a hot St. John’s squad at the Cornell Invitational. After falling to the Red Storm, UB was unable to win a five-game match against Binghamton and fell to the host Big Red to cap off the weekend. Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) and Jenna Mapé (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) each had career nights against Canisius. Clark recorded 54 assists while Mapé recorded 24 kills. Mapé Named To All-Tournament Squad Senior Jenna Mapé was also named to the all-tournament team of the Cornell Invitational. Mapé had a match-high 19 kills against Binghamton and completed the double-double, adding 10 digs in the contest. Mapé had a match-high 16 kills against Cornell and earlier in the week notched a new career high with 24 kills against cross-town rival Canisius.
Newcomers Getting It Done The Bulls have relied on their newcomers early on this season and have gotten significant contributions from them. Middle blockers Kelsey Lueders (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) and Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown/Genesee CC) spearhead a blocking performance that ranks tops in the MAC. Individually, Lueders is second in the conference with 1.34 blocks per game. She followed by Fitchette who is third at 1.33 blocks per game. UB ranks second in the conference in service aces and part of that is thanks to freshmen Lauren Fensten (Centennial, CO/Smoky Hill) and Ellen Robertson (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) who have recorded 21 and 19 service aces, respectively. As of late fellow newcomer Claudia Neba (Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill/Rutgers) has contributed with a few strong matches. Neba hit a match-high .360 against Binghamton and now has 51 kills on the year to go along with 19 total blocks. Home Sweet Home The Bulls continue to play well at Alumni Arena and following their 3-1 victory over Canisius are now a perfect 5-0 at home. UB is outhitting its opponents .233 to .120 in home matches and has a significant lead in service aces, at a 51 to 27 margin. Up Next
The Bulls wrap up non-conference action when they travel to Niagara on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 pm. UB then hosts the first weekend of conference action, facing Kent State on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7:00 pm and then hosting nationally-ranked Ohio on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 7:00 pm. |
