Bulls Finish Second at James Madison Tournament

Brown, Garcia named to All-Tournament Team

HARRISONBURG, VA - The University at Buffalo volleyball team lost a heartbreaking five-game match to the host Dukes to finish second at the James Madison Tournament tonight. Buffalo took an easy 30-20, 30-8, 30-13 decision from North Carolina A&T in its first match of the day before falling to James Madison 30-17, 20-30, 23-30, 30-26, 16-14. Junior setter Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) and freshman libero Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) were named to the All-Tournament Team.

In their first match of the day, junior Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) and sophomore Wendy Haskell (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence) paced the Bulls to an easy 3-0 sweep of North Carolina A&T with seven kills apiece. Haskell's seven kills are a career high, and senior Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) also recorded a career high with five service aces. Garcia had a match-high 10 digs and three service aces, and Weekley added a match-high five blocks. Sophomore Trisha Miazga (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/St. Joseph/North Carolina A&T) saw her first action of the season against her former school, recording two kills on four attempts and adding one block. The Bulls had a .387 team hitting percentage in the match, making just nine errors on 80 attempts with 40 kills.

Against James Madison, four Bulls reached double digits in kills, led by sophomore Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) with 16. Freshman Tammy Julé (Regina Beach, Saskatchewan/Riffel) had 13 kills, and Schrantz had 12 kills along with 14 digs. Weekley finished with 10 kills and four blocks, and Brown had 46 assists, 10 digs and five blocks. Garcia finished with a match-high 16 digs.

The Bulls (7-6) begin Mid-American Conference play next weekend at Western Michigan at 7 pm on Friday, September 24 and at Eastern Michigan at 1 pm on Saturday, September 25.
