Volleyball Weekly ReleasePLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Northwestern Wildcat Classic after posting two-day totals of 35 kills, 22 digs and three service aces in three matches. Shiels led the Bulls to their third win of the season with a 19-kill, 11-dig performance against Towson. She also put up impressive numbers in UB's loss to Northwestern with 12 kills and seven digs. Shiels leads the Bulls with 93 kills (2.82 per game) so far this season.
BULLS FINISH 1-2 AT NORTHWESTERN WILDCAT CLASSIC
Buffalo finished with a 1-2 record at the Northwestern Wildcat Classic, losing to Cleveland State (14-16, 14-16, 5-15) and Northwestern (12-15, 4-15, 15-12, 2-15) before defeating Towson (3-15, 15-12, 15-11, 15-9). Freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) had team highs of nine kills and nine digs, and junior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) posted 39 assists, a career-high seven kills, seven digs and three blocks to lead the Bulls against Cleveland State. Juniors Heather Barfuss (Huntington, NY/John H. Glenn) and Amelia Liddle (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) and sophomore Emily Dills (East Bethany, NY/University of San Francisco) also contributed seven kills apiece. Junior Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) paced the Bulls against Northwestern with 12 kills and a team-high seven digs. Junior Wendy Ryder (Bernhards Bay, NY/Genesee Community College) added nine kills and five digs, and Matikosh contributed seven kills, five digs and two blocks. Shiels posted a match-high 19 kills and 11 digs and junior Sasha Courbat (Cedar Falls, IA/Kirkwood Community College) added 12 kills and 10 digs to lead Buffalo over Towson. LaCour contributed 43 assists, seven digs and a career-high six blocks to the win, Buffalo's third of the season. The victory snapped a six-match Bulls' losing streak.
LACOUR POSTS CAREER HIGHS
Junior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) posted a career-high seven kills against Cleveland State and a career-high six blocks against Towson at the Northwestern Wildcat Classic. With 113 assists in three matches, she also moved herself into the eighth position on UB's all-time career assists list with 692. LaCour has 360 assists this season as UB's starting setter after posting a total of 332 assists in her first two seasons as Buffalo's backup setter. LaCour is also second on the team with 24 blocks (three solo, 21 assists) after entering the season with 11 career blocks (three solo, eight assists).
DILLS LEADS BULLS' DEFENSE
Sophomore Emily Dills (East Bethany, NY/University of San Francisco) has been UB's leader in blocks so far this season. With a match-high and career-high 10 blocks against Towson, Dills increased her team-leading numbers to 34 blocks for the season (four solo and 30 assists). Dills accumulated a total of 16 blocks all of last season playing at the University of San Francisco.
MATIKOSH STILL MAKING HER MARK
Freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) recorded 19 digs in three matches at the Northwestern Invitational, giving her a team-leading 100 digs (2.63 per game) this season. She also ranks second on the team with 78 kills (2.05 per game).
THIS COMING WEEK
Buffalo returns home this week to begin the MAC portion of the 2000 schedule, hosting Central Michigan on Friday, September 22 at 7 pm and Northern Illinois on Saturday, September 23 at 4 pm at Alumni Arena. Central Michigan and Northern Illinois both own a 2-1 all-time series lead over the Bulls, but the Bulls' only win over both teams came during the 1999 season.
