Bulls Finish Second at WVU Classic

Amy Brown and Lauren Burd named to All-Tournament Team

MORGANTOWN, WV - The University at Buffalo volleyball team concluded play at the West Virginia Classic Saturday with identical 3-1 wins over Memphis (30-28, 30-15, 21-30, 30-23) and Duquesne (30-28, 19-30, 39-37, 30-24) to place second at the tournament and improve to 7-5 overall on the season. Senior Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) and junior Lauren Burd (York, PA/Central York) were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Bulls rebounded from their tough 3-2 loss to the host Mountaineers on Friday night with a four-game win over Memphis in their opening match of the day, led by junior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) with 12 kills and a match-high 15 digs and Brown with 45 assists, 12 digs and three blocks. Burd (12), junior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) (11) and junior Jenna Mapé (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) (10) also reached double digits in kills, and Clark added seven digs, five blocks and three service aces. Senior Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) finished with nine kills and a match-high nine blocks. The Bulls had 13.5 blocks in the match compared to 7.0 by Memphis, and they outhit the Tigers .242 to .154.

Memphis (8-5) was led by Nancy Nellans with a match-high 19 kills and 13 digs and Laura Cote with 50 assists and 14 digs.

The Bulls kept their momentum long enough to earn another four-game win over Duquesne, including a dramatic 39-37 victory in game three, in their final match of the tournament. Morzenti led the Bulls with a match-high 24 kills, just one shy of her career high, and 11 digs while Brown added 53 assists, five kills and 13 digs. Brown and Morzenti have now both recorded double-doubles in each of the Bulls' last four matches. Weekley added 15 kills and six blocks, and Burd finished with 12 kills and three blocks. Clark added five kills, 12 digs and a team-high seven blocks, and sophomore libero Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) had a match-high 20 digs.

The Dukes (7-5) were led by Amanda Haeg with 17 kills, Diana Wuebker with 15 kills and 10 digs and Kristin Garnett with 55 assists and 14 digs.

To earn All-Tournament Team honors, Brown averaged 11.00 assists and 2.77 digs while also adding 10 kills in the Bulls' three matches, while Burd averaged 2.69 kills with a team-high .329 hitting percentage and 1.08 blocks.

The Bulls open up the Mid-American Conference portion of the 2005 schedule next weekend at Kent State at 7 pm on Friday, September 23 and at Ohio at 6 pm on Saturday, September 24.
