UB Volleyball Outlasts Binghamton, 3-2

Lindsay Matikosh leads Bulls to fifth win of season

VESTAL, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team avenged an earlier season loss to Binghamton tonight by defeating the Bearcats in five games at the West Gym in Vestal, NY, 19-30, 30-23, 25-30, 30-27, 16-14.

The win improves Buffalo's record to 5-6 overall and ties its win total from one year ago. The Bulls were led by junior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) who recorded a match-high 24 kills and 14 digs. Matikosh had recorded a career-high 29 kills in Buffalo's five-game loss to Binghamton on September 7 at the Illinois-Chicago Tournament.

The Bulls rallied from two four-point deficits (11-7 and 12-8) in game five to earn the win. After the two teams exchanged attack errors to tie the score at 14-14, junior Emily Dills (East Bethany, NY/Pavilion/San Francisco) put Buffalo ahead with a kill and an attack error by Binghamton's Jennifer Smith ended the game and the match in Buffalo's favor.

Sophomore Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) recorded a career-high 14 kills and 11 digs, and sophomore Kathryn Henry (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) added 14 digs. Freshman Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) tied her career high with 47 assists and set a career high with a match-high eight blocks.

The Bulls are next in action at the Western New York Holiday Inn Volleyball Invitational this weekend. They play at Canisius on Saturday, September 21 at 7 pm and host Youngstown State and Niagara on Sunday, September 22 at 11 am and 2 pm, respectively.
