Bulls Drop Two At Cornell Invitational

ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team suffered a minor setback on Saturday afternoon, dropping a pair of matches at the Cornell Invitational. UB fell to Binghamton in a five-game match and was then swept by the host Big Red. The Bulls dropped to 10-5 on the season.

In the morning contest, UB met its SUNY rival and played back-and-forth, but ultimately fell, 30-28, 22-30, 30-28, 25-30, 15-12. The Bulls finished with three players with double-digit kills, including sophomore transfer Claudia Neba (Aurora, CO/Smoky Hill/Rutgers) who hit a match-high .360 (15-6-25). Neba also finished with six total blocks, including one solo. Seniors Jenna Mapé (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) and Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) also finished in double digits with 19 and 14 kills, respectively. Mapé completed the double-double with 10 digs in the contest. The only other player to finish in double digits in that department was junior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek), who finished with a match-high 21.

Senior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) had two strong outings, contributing 47 assists against the Bearcats. Clark also finished the match with five service aces, a team high. The Bulls finished with 13 total team blocks in the contest. In addition to Neba’s six, sophomore Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown/Genesee CC) also recorded six total blocks in the match.

In the second match, the Bulls dropped a decision to Cornell, 30-27, 30-27, 30-26. Mapé and Morzenti each finished with double-digit kills at 16 and 12, respectively. Clark recorded assists on 81 percent of UB’s kills, notching 43 in the contest. Garcia added a match-high 12 digs against the Big Red. Fitchette, Neba and freshman Kelsey Lueders (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) each contributed three total blocks in the match.

The Bulls wrap up non-conference play when they travel to Niagara on Tuesday night. The match is set to begin at 7:00 pm. UB opens conference play at home this upcoming weekend.
