St. John’s Ends UB’s Winning Streak

Bulls fall despite hitting .400 in the second game

ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team ended its winning streak at 10, falling 3-0 to St. John’s on Friday afternoon at the Newman Arena on the campus of Cornell University. The Bulls dropped to 10-3 on the season while St. John’s improved its record to 11-1.

UB hit a .400 (14-2-30) in the second game, but was out-hit in the contest .316 to .174. Ultimately, UB fell by the score, 30-21, 30-26, 30-18. Senior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) led the Bulls with 11 kills on the afternoon and junior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) finished with a match-high 12 digs. Senior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) led UB with 24 assists.

The Bulls were able to out-block their opponent again, finishing with seven total team blocks. Sophomore Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown/Genesee CC) led the squad with six total blocks and chipped in with five kills. Fellow newcomer Ellen Robertson (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) recorded the only two service aces for a UB squad that led the conference in service aces coming into the match.

On the other side of the net, St. John’s had four players with double-digit kills, including three players that hit over .400 in the contest. The Red Storm also split setting duties as two players recorded over 20 assists.

The Bulls will look to regroup tomorrow as they have a pair of matches against Binghamton at 10:00 am and then the host, Cornell at 3:00 pm.
