Bulls Defeat Syracuse, Win Crusader Classic

The University at Buffalo volleyball team extended its winning streak to nine matches, taking four contests last week, including the Crusader Classic championship. The Bulls began the week posting a 3-0 shutout against Syracuse, before heading to Holy Cross for the weekend tournament. UB began the weekend with a tough 3-2 victory over Rhode Island, before putting matching 3-0 performances against Holy Cross and Army. The nine straight victories tie the Bulls’ Division I winning streak, which was set by the 1995 squad.

Lueders and Clark Named To All-Tournament Squad

Senior setter Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) and freshman Kelsey Lueders (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) were both named to the all-tournament team of the Crusader Classic after having career performances. Clark finished the week with 143 assists, playing just her first full season as the team’s setter. Lueders finished the week with 25 total team blocks, including four solos against the host Crusaders.

Did I Catch A Niner?

During UB’s nine-match winning streak, it has been the ability to block and serve that have propelled the streak. In those nine victories, the Bulls have recorded 30 more service aces then their opponents and have out-blocked the opposition, 101-55. Kelsey Lueders has led that charge with 53 total blocks in the nine contests. On the serving side, freshman Lauren Fensten (Centennial, CO/Smoky Hill) and senior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) both have 17 service aces in the nine wins.

Dig ‘Em

The Bulls have three individuals who have already reached the century mark in digs on the year and one more who is very close. Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek), who recorded her 1,000th career dig earlier in the season, leads the team with 168. Seniors Nikki Morzenti and Jenna Mapé (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) have recorded 112 and 103 digs, respectively. Fellow senior, Brandie Clark, is nearing her way to 100 digs as she has 94 so far on the year.
