Volleyball Concludes Play at Montana State Tournament

Freshman Lizaiha Garcia named to All-Tournament Team

BOZEMAN, MT - The University at Buffalo volleyball team concluded play at the Montana State Tournament with a thrilling 3-2 win over Dartmouth and 3-0 loses to host Montana State and Portland. Their 1-3 record at the tournament moves the Bulls to 4-5 overall on the season. Freshman libero Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) was Buffalo's selection to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.57 digs per game in the Bulls' four matches.

In a match played late last night, the Bulls dropped a 30-23, 30-20, 30-17 decision to host Montana State. Sophomore Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) led the Bulls with nine kills and three blocks, and sophomore Lauren Burd (York, PA/Central York) had five kills and a match-high six blocks, including two solos, in the loss.

Buffalo rebounded for a come-from-behind 30-26, 23-30, 28-30, 30-27, 25-23 win over Dartmouth in their first match this afternoon. Five players posted double digits in kills for the Bulls, led by a career-high 25 by Morzenti. Junior Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) tied her career high with 15 kills while also adding a match-high nine blocks. Morzenti (25 kills, 15 digs), senior Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) (16 kills, 11 digs), freshman Tammy Julé (Regina Beach, Saskatchewan/Riffel) (12 kills, 15 digs) and junior setter Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) (career-high 68 assists, 13 digs) all recorded double-doubles in the match, and Garcia led the Bulls with a team-high 17 digs. Burd also reached double digits in kills with a career-high 11 while adding four blocks.

The two-hour and 14-minute match with the Big Green took its toll on the Bulls who then dropped a 30-18, 30-10, 30-23 decision to Portland in their final match of the tournament. Morzenti again led the Bulls with eight kills, and Weekley recorded five kills and three blocks in the loss.

The Bulls (4-5) are at Niagara at 7 pm on Wednesday, September 15 before participating in the James Madison Tournament next weekend.
