Volleyball Weekly Release

Player of the Week

Junior Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) led the Bulls offensively at the Syracuse Orange Classic, compiling 27 kills in 10 games (2.7 per game). She also added 15 digs (1.5 per game) in UB's four matches. Shiels is leading Buffalo in numerous statistical categories so far this season, including kills (58), kills per game (2.52) and total attempts (175).

Bulls Finish FIFTH AT SYRACUSE ORANGE CLASSIC

Buffalo finished in fifth place at the Syracuse Orange Classic and fell to 2-5 on the season with losses to Southern Illinois, Syracuse, Fordham and Maryland-Baltimore County. In their opening match of the tournament, the Bulls lost three straight games to undefeated Southern Illinois University, 15-8, 15-11, 15-6. Junior Wendy Ryder (Bernhards Bay, NY/Genesee Community College) led UB in the loss with eight kills on 18 attempts and two blocks while freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) had a team-high six digs, one block and two kills. The Bulls then dropped three games to the host Orangewomen, 15-12, 15-11, 15-7. Junior Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) led Buffalo with 13 kills on 25 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage while also adding eight digs. Ryder chipped in eight kills, one block and one service ace.

The Bulls then suffered a 15-11, 15-5, 15-6 loss to Fordham despite getting a seven-kill, nine-dig performance from Matikosh. They appeared to rebound quickly from that loss when they scored a 15-9 win over Maryland-Baltimore County in the opening game of their final match of the tournament. The Retrievers jumped out to an early 8-3 lead before the Bulls came back, allowing just one more point while stringing together 12 of their own. They then found themselves down in game two, 11-6, and again mounted a comeback to force a tie at 12-12. UMBC held on for a 16-14 win and used that momentum to earn 15-4 and 15-2 wins in games three and four to end the match. Junior Sasha Courbat (Cedar Falls, IA/Kirkwood Community College) and sophomore Emily Dills (East Bethany, NY/University of San Francisco) each recorded eight kills in the match, and Matikosh posted a match-high eight digs.

LACOUR MOVES UP ON CAREER ASSISTS LIST

Junior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) moved up one more notch on UB's all-time career assists list after recording 117 assists in four matches at the Syracuse Orange Classic. LaCour has 247 assists on the season (9.15 per game) and 579 for her career. She is quickly closing in on eighth place all-time (633).

LaCour also tied her own career single-match high with four blocks against Maryland-Baltimore County. She has 14 blocks so far this season (three solo, 11 assists) after compiling a total of 11 blocks (three solo, eight assists) in her first two seasons with the Bulls.

NEWCOMERS SEE PLAYING TIME

Head coach Nadine Lilavois has shown confidence in her newcomers, granting all seven significant playing time through the first two weeks of the season. Statistically-speaking, freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) and sophomore Emily Dills (East Bethany, NY/University of San Francisco) have had the greatest impact. Matikosh leads the Bulls with 81 digs (3.0 per game) and ranks second on the team with 56 kills (2.07 per game). Dills is UB's blocks leader with a total of 22 for the season (1.05 per game), including four solo.
