PULLMAN, WA - The University at Buffalo volleyball team lost two close games on its way to a 3-0 loss to the Idaho Vandals to open the Washington State Tournament Friday night, 30-26, 30-20, 31-29. The Bulls (4-2) were led by junior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) with 15 kills and sophomore Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) with 12 digs.

After the Vandals (5-2) pulled ahead in game one, the Bulls fought back to tie the score at 24-24 only to see Idaho rally to earn the 30-26 win. The Vandals used a four-point run to go ahead 15-10 in game two en route to the easy 30-20 win, and they pulled out a come-from-behind 31-29 win in game three to complete the sweep. Idaho again led 15-10 in game three, but the Bulls came out of a timeout and charged back to tie the score at 16-16 and then take a 24-19 lead. Buffalo had game point on three occasions but could not put it away. Idaho tied the score at 29-29 and then won the game and the match on a kill and a UB attack error.

Morzenti was the only player to reach double digits in kills for the Bulls, who struggled with a .120 hitting percentage in the match compared to Idaho’s .288. Senior Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) had eight kills and three blocks, and junior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) had seven kills and two blocks. Senior Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) finished with 31 assists, three service aces and six digs.

The Vandals were led by Meghan Brown with 14 kills and 11 digs and Amanda Bowman with 10 kills.

The Bulls conclude the tournament on Saturday with a match against the host Cougars at 2 pm ET and against Oral Roberts at 8:30 pm ET.
