Volleyball Concludes Play at Orange Classic

Bulls lose to Fordham and Maryland-Baltimore County

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team finished in fifth place at the Syracuse University Orange Classic after losing two matches to Fordham and Maryland-Baltimore County. The Bulls suffered an 11-15, 5-15, 6-15 loss to Fordham in their first match of the day despite getting a seven-kill, nine-dig performance from freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda). Matikosh also added two service aces, and junior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) contributed 33 setter assists.

Buffalo appeared to rebound from the loss to Fordham when it scored a 15-9 win over Maryland-Baltimore County in the opening game of the match. The Retrievers jumped out to an early 8-3 lead before the Bulls came back, allowing just one more point while stringing together 12 of their own. Junior Jessica Redding (Andover, MA/Eastern Connecticut State) served for the final three points of the match. The Bulls then found themselves down in game two, 11-6, and again mounted a comeback to force a tie at 12-12. UMBC held on for a 16-14 win and used that momentum to earn 15-4 and 15-2 wins in games three and four to end the match. Junior Sasha Courbat (Cedar Falls, IA/Kirkwood Community College) and sophomore Emily Dills (East Bethany, NY/University of San Francisco) each recorded eight kills in the match, and Matikosh posted a match-high eight digs.

The Bulls (2-5 overall) will participate in their final tournament of the season next weekend at Northwestern University. Buffalo faces Cleveland State on Friday, September 15 and the host Wildcats and Towson on Saturday, September 16. The Bulls then begin Mid-American Conference play on Friday, September 22 when they host Central Michigan at Alumni Arena at 7 pm.
