Bulls Defeat Rhode Island In Five
The Bulls took the match, 30-24, 28-30, 20-30, 30-28, 15-10 to improve to 2-0 on the season in five-game matches. Earlier this year, UB defeated Coastal Carolina in five games. The teams hit nearly identical numbers as UB slightly out-hit the Rams, .178 to .172, but it was its ability to block that led it to the victory. The Bulls tied a season high with 16 total team blocks, including nine total blocks from sophomore Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown/Genesee CC). Fitchette also contributed with eight kills on the evening.
Senior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) hit a double-double for UB, with team highs in kills (17) and digs (14), while fellow senior Jenna Mapé (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) recorded 14 kills in the contest. Senior setter Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) finished the night with 40 assists and junior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) contributed with 13 digs and one service ace. As a whole, UB had 11 service aces, led by three from Clark. Morzenti joined freshmen Lauren Fensten (Centennial, CO/Smoky Hill) and Ellen Robertson (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) with two service aces a piece. UB will have two more matches tomorrow, with the first against the host Crusaders at 2:00 pm. The Bulls wrap up the Crusader Classic with a match against Army later that night at 5:00 pm. |
