Niagara Defeats UB IN Five-Game Thriller
Freshman Kristin Bignell (Drayton, Ontario/Norwell District) hit a team-high .450, registering 10 kills and just one error on 20 attempts. Freshman Marisa Hornbaker (Colorado Springs, CO/Colorado Springs Christian) had 13 kills, while sophomore Maria Mezzadri (Livonia, MI/Livonia Stevenson) also registered 10 kills. Hornbaker completed the double-double with 15 digs, finishing as one of four players with double-digit digs. Senior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) had a match-high 23 digs, while freshman Jenna Gabello (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) had 14 digs. Freshman Lindsey Schlegel (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) added 10 digs, as well as 40 assists. UB also showed its prowess in its ability to block, outblocking the Purple Eagles, 13.0 to 7.0. Sophomore Kelsey Lueders (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) had eight total blocks, including two solo blocks. Schlegel had five block assists, while Bignell had four total blocks, including a solo.
Niagara was led by 18 kills and 18 digs from Raelean Rush and 17 kills from Maureen Lawrence. Lindsey Kriger had a match-high eight service aces for the Purple Eagles. The Bulls will now hit the road for their next seven matches leading up to conference play. UB begins that stretch at the Pittsburgh Invitational this Friday. The Bulls will face Alabama-Birmingham at 10:30 am and George Mason at 5:00 pm. UB wraps up the tournament on Saturday when it faces the host Panthers at 1:30 pm. |
