Bulls Take Three At WNY Invitational The University at Buffalo volleyball team extended its winning streak to five matches with three wins this past weekend. After three-game sweeps against Quinnipiac and Youngstown State, the Bulls found all they could handle with a tough Coastal Carolina squad. After falling behind 2-0, UB came back to win the match, 3-2. The 0-2 comeback was the first for UB in the Jim Lodes Era. The Bulls continued to get strong play from their newcomers, who played for the first time at Alumni Arena. Garcia Surpasses 1,000 Career Digs Junior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) became just the tenth player in UB volleyball history to surpass the 1,000-dig mark for her career with 29 digs against Coastal Carolina. Garcia now has 1,022 digs, which put her in ninth place all-time. Currently, Garcia is on pace to become UB’s all-time digs leader.
Block Party Through the first two weeks of the season, the Bulls lead the Mid-American Conference in blocks. UB is averaging 2.83 blocks per game, including 110 block assists already on the year. The Bulls are led by two newcomers in the department, who also are one and two in the MAC in blocks, respectively. Freshman Kelsey Lueders (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) currently leads the conference at 1.46 blocks per game. She is followed up by sophomore Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown/Genesee CC), who is averaging 1.33 blocks per game. Aces Wild The Bulls are currently second in the conference in service aces, registering 2.46 per game. Furthermore, three UB student-athletes are in the top 10 in the conference in that category. Lizaiha Garcia is third in the MAC at 0.58 aces per game. Freshman Lauren Fensten (Centennial, CO/Smoky Hill) and senior Jenna Mapé (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) are fifth and sixth in the conference, respectively.
DE-FENSE The Bulls have relied on a steady defense early this season. In addition to leading the MAC in blocks, the Bulls have also allowed the second lowest opponent hitting percentage in the conference. Opponents have a hitting percentage of just .112 against UB, which trails only Central Michigan. Up Next
The Bulls host Syracuse tonight at 6:00 pm before hitting the road for the Holy Cross Invitational this weekend. UB will face Rhode Island on Friday, Sept. 8 at 5:00 pm and play two matches on Saturday. The first match will be against the host Crusaders at 2:00 pm and that will be followed up by a contest against Army at 5:00 pm.
