Volleyball Comes From Behind to Beat SIU

Bulls will face Duke and UNC-Charlotte to conclude Duke Classic on Saturday

DURHAM, NC - The University at Buffalo volleyball team came from behind to earn a 3-1 win over Southern Illinois in the opening match of the four-team Duke Classic in Durham, NC. The Bulls dropped game one of the match by a 30-27 score, but stormed back with 30-27, 34-32 and 30-28 wins in games two through four to improve their record to 3-2 on the season. All five of the Bulls' matches so far in the 2003 season have been decided in four games.

Freshman Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) led the Bulls with 20 kills, 17 digs and five blocks. Buffalo had three other players in double digits in kills - senior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) and junior Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) with 15 apiece and senior Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) with 12 - and Schrantz also posted a double-double with 19 digs. Sophomore Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) added 52 assists and 15 digs, and sophomore Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) finished with six kills, seven digs, eight blocks and a career-high seven service aces. Two of Weekley's six kills on the night were gamewinners, accounting for the final point in game three and four.

The Bulls (3-2) will conclude play in the Duke Classic on Saturday, September 6 with matches against the host Blue Devils at 12:30 pm and UNC-Charlotte at 5 pm.
