Volleyball Weekly ReleasePlayer of the Week
Freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) began her career at UB in impressive fashion, earning Tournament Most Valuable Player honors at the UB Invitational. Matikosh started all three matches and played in every game, leading the Bulls with 37 kills and 53 digs. Matikosh had match-highs of 18 digs and 17 kills in Buffalo's final win of the tournament over Canisius. With the Bulls down 14-12 in the fourth game, Matikosh accounted for three straight points with two kills and an assisted block, and she served for the final two points of the game and the match in the 17-15 Buffalo win. Matikosh also posted 17 kills and a match-high 22 digs in UB's five-game win over Bucknell.
Bulls Finish Second at Own Invitational
The Bulls posted a 2-1 record at the UB Invitational, with their only loss coming in five games to the Providence Friars, the eventual-tournament champions with a perfect 3-0 record. The Bulls' 2-1 record was good for a second-place finish, in front of Bucknell (1-2) and Canisius (0-3). The Bulls defeated Bucknell in five games, 15-9, 15-11, 15-17, 5-15, 15-12, and Canisius in four games, 9-15, 15-10, 15-13, 17-15. Buffalo also went to five games against the Friars, losing 15-9, 3-15, 4-15, 15-8, 12-15.
Ryder Named to All-Tournament Team
Junior Wendy Ryder (Bernhards Bay, NY/Genesee Community College) represented the Bulls on the All-Tournament Team after playing a significant role in each of their two wins at the UB Invitational. Ryder was an integral part of Buffalo's offense, posting a career-high 16 kills against Canisius and 29 for the tournament. Ryder appeared in 11 games over the weekend in her first tournament with the Bulls. She redshirted the 1999 season after transferring from nearby Genesee Community College.
Lacour Inks Name in UB Record Book
With 130 assists in three games at the UB Invitational, junior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) moved into 10th place all-time on the UB career assists list. LaCour has 462 career assists from her setter position. She also recorded a career-high 63 assists in UB's five-game win over Bucknell.
Dills Makes Presence Felt
Sophomore transfer Emily Dills (East Bethany, NY/University of San Francisco) began her UB career by leading all players at the UB Invitational with 19 blocks, including four solo. She had a career-high nine blocks (two solo) against Canisius. Dills was one of six newcomers to the UB volleyball program to see action in the UB Invitational.
Liddle Posts Career High
Junior Amelia Liddle (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) led the Bulls in their five-game loss to Providence, posting a career-high 11 kills on 26 attempts while also adding nine digs. For the tournament, Liddle finished with 23 kills, 14 digs, nine blocks and a team-high .291 attack percentage.
This Coming Week
The Bulls will travel down the I-90 to Syracuse, NY to participate in the Syracuse Orange Classic on Friday, September 8 and Saturday, September 9. Buffalo opens the tournament against Southern Illinois, a team it has never faced previously. The Bulls will also square off against the Orangewomen, Fordham and Maryland-Baltimore County.
