Volleyball Opens Season With 5-Game Win

Bulls defeat Bucknell at UB Invitational

BUFFALO, NY - Freshman Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) had 17 kills and a game-high 22 digs to lead the University at Buffalo volleyball team to a five-game win over Bucknell at the UB Invitational at Alumni Arena.

The Bulls pulled out the first two games of the match by 15-9 and 15-11 scores before Bucknell stole the momentum in the third game. The Bisons came back from a 9-4 deficit to earn a 17-15 win, with the final two points of the match coming off service aces by Whitney Williams, and they then breezed to a 15-5 win in the fourth game. The two teams exchanged points in the final game before the Bulls were able to gain the lead for good at 10-9. A kill by junior Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) ended the match at 15-12.

Shiels finished with 19 kills on the night and three service aces, while junior Larissa LaCour (West Islip, NY/West Islip) led the team offensively with 63 assists. Junior Heather Barfuss (Huntington, NY/John H. Glenn) added nine kills and 10 digs.

In the opening game of the Invitational, Providence rolled to an easy 15-6, 15-11, 15-4 win over Canisius. The UB Invitational continues at Noon tomorrow with Bucknell and Providence squaring off. The Bulls face Providence at 3:00 p.m., and Canisius and Bucknell battle at 5:00 p.m. Buffalo and Canisius will play the final match of the Invitational at 7:30 p.m.
