Bulls Drop Opener at UB Hampton Inn-vitational

Head coach Sally Kus' first match ends in five-game loss to Coastal Carolina

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team opened the 2002 season with a five-game loss to Coastal Carolina at the UB Hampton Inn-vitational tonight in Alumni Arena. The Bulls opened up the match with a 30-27 win in game one before Coastal Carolina grabbed some momentum and took games two and three by 30-22 and 30-25 scores. The Bulls forced a fifth game with a 30-19 win in game four before Coastal Carolina took a 15-12 decision in game five. The Bulls had battled back from a 14-8 deficit with four straight points to make the score 14-12 in the deciding game, but a kill by Sarah Bennett ended the game and the match.

Buffalo had four players finish in double figures in kills, led by junior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) with 15, including six in the opening game and four in the deciding game. Matikosh also finished with 15 digs and three blocks. Freshmen Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) (14 kills, six blocks) and Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) (28 assists, team-high 18 digs) both had impressive showings in their first collegiate matches, and junior Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) started the year strong with 13 kills and six blocks. The sophomore duo of Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) (10 kills, 28 assists, 11 digs, four service aces) and Kathryn Henry (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) (nine kills, 15 digs, three blocks) also contributed to the Bulls' effort.

The Bulls outhit the Chanticleers (.171 to .160) and registered 14 team blocks compared to Coastal Carolina's nine. The Chanticleers were led by Jeanne Lambert with 12 kills, six service aces and a match-high 29 digs. Bennett (15) and Katie Knutson (11) also recorded double digits in kills.

In the opening game of the UB Hampton Inn-vitational, Bucknell held on for a 28-30, 30-20, 30-27, 29-31, 15-7 win over Canisius. Tomorrow's schedule begins at 11 am with Canisius taking on Coastal Carolina, followed by Bucknell versus Buffalo at 1 pm. Bucknell and Coastal Carolina will meet at 4 pm, and Canisius and Buffalo will end the tournament with a 6 pm match.
