Volleyball Opens Season With Two Wins

Bulls conclude play in Western New York Tournament on Saturday

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team opened the 2003 season with two wins in the Western New York Volleyball Tournament. The Bulls opened the year with a 3-1 win over North Carolina State (28-30, 30-24, 30-17, 30-24), followed by a 3-1 win over Siena (30-24, 30-22, 23-30, 30-24), marking the first time since the 1999 season that they have started off with a 2-0 record. Senior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) led the Bulls with 40 kills in the two matches, including 23 kills on 35 attempts with no attack errors versus Siena. Her .657 hitting percentage is a UB record for a four-game match.

Matikosh led the Bulls' attack against North Carolina State with 17 kills and 10 digs, while freshman Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) began her college career in impressive fashion with 12 kills and 11 digs. Junior Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) also contributed a team-high 17 digs in the win. Against Siena, senior Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) and Morzenti both reached double figures in kills with 11 and 10, respectively, and sophomore Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) recorded 53 assists and 11 digs. Freshman Lauren Burd (York, PA/Central York) recorded a match-high eight blocks to lead the Bulls defensively.

In other tournament action at Alumni Arena, Seton Hall won the opening match of the day over Youngstown State, 3-0 (30-25, 30-28, 30-23), and then also shut out North Carolina State, 3-0 (30-20, 30-21, 30-21), later in the day.

The Western New York Volleyball Tournament is a 12-team tournament that is being hosted by UB, Canisius and Niagara. The Bulls have two matches tomorrow, against Boston College at 1 pm and against Syracuse at 7 pm. The remaining tournament schedule for Alumni Arena on Saturday is Cleveland State versus Siena at 11 am and Cleveland State versus Syracuse at 3 pm.
