SYRACUSE, NY – The University at Buffalo volleyball team struggled in its trip to Syracuse, falling to the host Orange by a score of 3-0, Tuesday evening at the Manley Field House. 12 different UB players saw action, but the youthful Bulls were unable to come away with the victory. The loss drops Buffalo to 0-4 on the season.

Syracuse took the match 30-18, 30-24, 30-21 and out hit the visiting Bulls .267 to .000. UB had its best chance for victory in the second game, but were unable to hold on to a lead. Head coach Jim Lodes tweaked his rotation for that second game, as well as the third, as many reserves saw action in the match. One of those reserves was sophomore Maria Mezzadri (Livonia, MI/Livonia Stevenson), who had five kills in her first collegiate appearance. Mezzadri also chipped in a block assist.

Freshman Richelle Bigelow (Littleton, CO/Dakota Ridge) led UB with seven kills and her three service aces were tops for the match. Senior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) added to her career dig total with 14 against the Orange as she is now just 35 digs away from becoming UB’s all-time digs leader. Freshman Lindsey Schlegel (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had 23 assists to lead the Bulls and freshman Kristin Bignell (Drayton, Ontario/Norwell District) led the way with three total blocks, including one solo.

The Orange, who improved to 2-2 on the season, had two players in double figures led by 15 kills from Cheryl Cobbina and 10 kills from Kacie MacTavish. Samantha Ainsworth had 22 assists and Joscie Kaup had 14 digs for Syracuse.

The Bulls will be back in action this weekend as they host the Western New York Invitational beginning on Friday. UB will face Valparaiso on Friday evening at 7:00 pm.
