Bulls Split Opening Weekend The University at Buffalo volleyball team dropped a pair of 3-0 decisions on the opening day of play last Friday, but made up for it in style, sweeping North Carolina A&T, 3-0, Saturday afternoon and then taking a 3-1 decision against High Point later that night. With five newcomers seeing significant playing time during the first weekend, UB was able to see the future of its program in action. Sophomore transfer Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown/Genesee CC) hit a .415 on the weekend, including 17 total blocks. Prior to coming to UB, Fitchette was one of the best blockers in the NJCAA last season, finishing 14th in the nation in hitting efficiency and 10th in the nation in blocks per game.
Morzenti Surpasses 1,000 career kills Senior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) continued her storied career at UB, becoming one of eight players in UB volleyball history to eclipse the 1,000-kill mark. Morzenti entered the season with 986 career kills and reached the milestone in the first game of the season with a 15-kill performance against UNC-Charlotte. Morzenti finished with 51 kills on the weekend, giving her 1,037 for her career, which is seventh all-time. The senior outside hitter, is looking to join even more exclusive company as she is just 130 digs shy of 1,000 for her career. Just four players in UB history have achieved the 1,000 kills/1,000 digs plateau.
Block Party The Bulls exploded with 16 blocks in their victory over High Point on Saturday night. Alyssa Fitchette and freshman Kelsey Lueders (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) combined for nine blocks as each had a solo block, while Lueders finished with eight blocks assists and Fitchette six. Over the course of the first four games, the Bulls have steadily increased their team blocks total. In the opener the Bulls combined for just four blocks, but that was followed by a six-block and nine-block performance, respectively. Although early in the year, the 16 against the Panthers serve as a season high.
Setting The Tone Senior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) made a solid first impression as the team’s setter, finishing with 126 assists on the weekend. Clark, who played the right side last season, moved over to setter after the graduation of Amy Brown. In addition to her assists, Clark contributed with 19 kills and a .372 hitting percentage as well as 36 digs.
Dig ‘Em Junior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) continued to show why she is one of the top liberos in the MAC. In the opening weekend of play, she finished with 70 digs, giving her 971 for her career. Garcia is just 20 kills shy of reaching the top 10 in UB’s volleyball history. UB Next
