Buffalo Volleyball Takes TwoHIGH POINT, NC – The University at Buffalo volleyball team evened its record during the 2006 season, sweeping North Carolina A&T this afternoon and defeating High Point, 3-1, Saturday night at the Millis Center. The Bulls are now 2-2 on the year.
The Bulls defeated the Aggies, 30-24, 30-15, 30-22 to pick up their first win of the year and did it in style, outhitting their opponent .280 to .038. Jenna Mapé (Calgary, Alberta/Father Lacombe) tied for a match-high 11 kills, while contributing five digs. Senior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat) finished with a match-high 29 assists, while putting up matching sevens in the kills and digs categories. UB benefited from a shaky Aggie offense, that put up negative hitting percentage numbers in both the second and third games. Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) and Lauren Fensten (Centennial, CO/Smoky Hill) each recorded double-digit digs with 15 and 11, respectively.
The second game turned into a block party for UB as it defeated High Point, 30-28, 25-30, 30-27, 30-19. The Bulls combined for 16 blocks, including five from freshman Kelsey Lueders (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) and four from sophomore Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown/Genesee CC). Fitchette also hit the ball well on the day, hitting a .556 (5-0-9) in the first game and .467 (9-2-15) in the second contest. Clark nearly missed a triple-double against High Point, finishing the game with eight kills, 38 assists and 14 digs. Garcia finished with a match-high 23 digs, giving her 70 on the weekend, and 971 for her career.
After getting off to a slow start, where the Bulls hit just .083 in the first game, UB steadily improved and it outhit the Panthers .390 to .122 in the match-clinching fourth game. Senior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) contributed with a match-high 18 kills. The Bulls will be back in action next weekend as they host the Western New York Invitational.
