CHARLOTTE, NC – The University at Buffalo volleyball team kicked off its 2006 season with a pair of 3-0 losses to Charlotte and Davidson on Friday.

UB, playing with eight newcomers on the roster, put forth a strong effort against the host 49ers, dropping the match 30-24, 30-27, 30-27. Senior Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor, FL/Clearwater) led the Bulls, finishing just short of a double-double with a game-high 15 kills and 9 digs on the afternoon. The 15 kills put Morzenti over the 1,000-kill mark for her career with 1,001. Junior Lizaiha Garcia (Dayton, OH/Beavercreek) also played well finishing with game highs in both digs and service aces with 15 and three, respectively.

The newcomers saw plenty of action, including Alyssa Fitchette (Watertown, NY/Watertown/Genesee CC) who hit a .364 in the contest as well as recording UB’s only solo block on the afternoon. Sophomore Kate Love (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland/Temple) also made a solid UB debut, recording six kills in 14 attempts.

Senior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat), making the switch to the team’s setter this season, led the team with 33 assists.

In the night cap, the Bulls fought hard again, but fell to Davidson, 30-24, 30-26, 32-30. Morzenti again just missed a double-double, finishing with a team-high nine kills and eight digs. Garcia finished with a team-best 17 digs for the match.

Freshman Kelsey Lueders (Littleton, CO/Chatfield) finished the day with seven block assists, including five against Davidson.

The Bulls had their chances, taking the lead in all three games. UB had a 13-9 advantage in game one, before the Wildcats went on an 11-2 run to take the advantage. Down early in the second game, UB made a run of its own, taking the lead at 20-19. After a 22-22 tie, Davidson went on to outscore UB 8-4 to take the game. The third game was no different as each team took a lead, but eventually the scoreboard read 30-30 and the teams were forced to play on. Davidson would take the next two points for the 32-30 victory.

UB remains in North Carolina and will play two matches tomorrow, including a 2:00 pm start against North Carolina A&T and a 7:00 pm match against High Point.
