Volleyball Award Winners Announced

Lindsay Matikosh named MVP, Katie Weekley named Top Newcomer

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team announced its 2002 team awards at UB's annual Athletic Awards Banquet, held at Samuel's Grande Manor on Tuesday, April 29. Junior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) was named Most Valuable Player for the second straight season, freshman Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) was tabbed as the team's Top Newcomer, sophomore Molly Schrantz (Depew, NY/Lancaster) received the Coach's Award and sophomore Kathryn Henry (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) was named Most Improved Player. In addition, senior Rebecca Ashare (Coram, NY/Longwood) received the prestigious Clifford C. Furnas Postgraduate Scholarship.

Matikosh became the fourth player of all-time, and only the second junior, to reach the 1,000 mark in both career kills and career digs during the 2002 season. She also became the third player in UB volleyball history to have over 400 kills and 400 digs in the same season, and her 441 kills are third all-time and her 450 digs are fourth all-time in UB's single-season record book. Matikosh finished the year ranked sixth in the Mid-American Conference in kills per game (3.61), seventh in digs per game (3.69) and fifth in service aces per game (0.40).

Weekley led the Bulls with a .201 hitting percentage and ranked second on the team with 110 blocks during her freshman campaign, while also averaging 1.77 kills per game. She ranked 12th in the MAC in blocks per game (1.04), and she recorded a single-match high of 10 blocks versus Bucknell at the UB Hampton Inn-vitational at the beginning of the season.

Schrantz's versatility made her an all-around contributor for the Bulls in 2002, and she finished the season with 2.31 kills per game, 3.44 assists per game, 2.05 digs per game and 0.49 blocks per game. She was named to the All-Tournament Team at both the UB Hampton Inn-vitational and at the WNY Holiday Inn Invitational, and she had 13 matches with double digits in kills, 17 matches with double digits in assists and 10 matches with double digits in digs.

Henry improved on her freshman season numbers of 1.04 kills per game and 2.66 digs per game by averaging 1.21 kills per game and 3.21 digs per game as a sophomore in 2002. Her 3.21 digs per game ranked second on the team, and she recorded a career-high 18 digs against Bucknell at the UB Hampton Inn-vitational.

The Clifford C. Furnas Postgraduate Scholarship is provided through annual interest earnings from the C.C. Furnas Fund in the University at Buffalo Foundation, Inc. and recognizes outstanding undergraduate performance in scholarship and athletic prowess. The recipient must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and be committed to graduate study, have strong personal character and outstanding athletic accomplishments. Ashare, a perfect 4.0 student with plans to begin pursuing a master's degree in clinical psychology, finished her career with 415 kills and 159 blocks. She was a team co-captain in 2003 and was named to the Academic All-MAC team and to the Verizon Academic All-District I First Team, as chosen by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Director's of America). Ashare is also this year's winner of the Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Academics. She will be recognized with that award at UB's general graduation in May.
