UB Volleyball Announces Award WinnersBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo volleyball team announced its 2001 team awards at UB's annual Athletic Awards Banquet, held at Samuel's Grande Manor on Sunday, April 28. Sophomore Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) was named Most Valuable Player, freshman Katie Henry (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) was tabbed as the team's Top Newcomer, sophomore Alexis Bouie (Albion, NY/Albion) received the Coach's Award and sophomore Becky Ashare (Coram, NY/Longwood) was named Most Improved Player.
Bouie, a middle hitter, finished the 2001 season with 196 kills (third on the team) and 82 blocks (first on the team), well over her freshman season totals of 68 kills and 42 blocks. She had a career-high 17 kills against Bowling Green on October 5 and a career-high nine blocks against Marshall on November 3. Bouie, who was also the recipient of the Coach's Award in 2000, also competed on the UB women's basketball team during the 2001-02 season. Ashare, a middle hitter, came back with a bang after redshirting in 2000, improving on
her freshman season totals of 92 kills and 44 blocks in 1999 with 200 kills (second on the team) and
58 blocks (second on the team) in 2001. She also led the Bulls with a .241 hitting percentage during
the season. Ashare was named to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District I Volleyball Second Team,
selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), and she also received the
UB athletic department's Unsung Hero Award at the banquet, selected by the Student Athlete
Advisory Committee and recognizing an individual for dedication, unselfishness and contribution to his or
her team. |
