BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo volleyball head coach Sally Kus announced the Bulls'
2003 team award winners at UB's annual Athletic Awards Banquet, held at the Four Points Sheraton on
Tuesday, April 27. Senior Lindsay Matikosh (North Tonawanda, NY/North
Tonawanda) was named Most Valuable Player, sophomore
Amy Brown (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon)
was named Most Improved, sophomore Katie Weekley (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne)
received the Coaches' Award and freshman
Nikki Morzenti (Safety Harbor,
FL/Clearwater) was chosen as Top Newcomer.
 | | Lindsay Matikosh | Matikosh led the Bulls in kills with 408 (3.52 per game, 10th in the Mid-American
Conference), and she ranked second on the team with 350 digs (3.02 per game). Matikosh's 408 kills on the
season rank as the eighth-highest total for a single season in school history, and she also set a
single-match record for hitting percentage in a four-game match (.657 versus Siena on August 29). Matikosh
finished her successful four-year career with 1,450 kills and 1,414 digs, both second on UB's all-time career lists.
 | | Amy Brown | Brown set the UB single-season records for assists with 1,288 in 2003, passing former
record-holder Barb Tinus who compiled 1,192 assists during the 1986 season. In addition, Brown's
11.10 assists per game are also a UB single-season record, as well as the only time a Buffalo setter has
recorded double digits in assists per game for a season. Brown led the Bulls to a school-record
1,477 assists in 2003 as a team. She currently ranks fifth all-time at UB in career assists with 2,236.
 | | Katie Weekley | Weekley led the MAC and ranked 17th in the nation in blocks per game (1.49) in 2003. Her
130 block assists are tied for the fourth-highest single-season total in school history, and her 159 total
blocks are the sixth-highest single-season total. Weekley also averaged 2.28 kills per game and led the
Bulls with a .225 hitting percentage in 2003.
 | | Nikki Morzenti | Morzenti was named to the 2003 MAC All-Freshman Team after finishing her rookie
campaign second on the team in kills with 331 (2.88 per game) and fourth on the team in digs with 274 (2.38
per game) and in blocks with 70 (0.61 per game). Morzenti's 331 kills are the most ever recorded by
a freshman in UB volleyball history. She also tied for second on the team behind Matikosh with
28 service aces.
The Bulls finished the 2003 season with an 11-20 overall record and a 5-11 mark in the
Mid-American Conference. The 11 wins marks the first time since the 1999 season (when they went
11-19 overall) that the Bulls have reached double digits in the win column. In addition, their five MAC
wins are the most league wins the Bulls have recorded in a season since joining the conference in 1998.
