Syracuse brings over 20 years of playing and coaching experience to the UB program. A native Western New Yorker, he graduated from Cleveland Hill High School where he played on the Eagles' Sectional Championship team. He began playing club volleyball while enrolled at Erie Community College, and after graduating from ECC, he received a full scholarship to Rutgers University. While at Rutgers, Syracuse competed in the NCAA Men's Volleyball Final Four. He has also competed in the Empire State Games for 11 years, playing for Western New York and earning six gold and five silver medals.

After his collegiate career at Rutgers, Syracuse was offered the opportunity to play professionally in Europe. He spent two years in Sweden, playing on a Division 2 Championship team. He then moved to the French First Division where as a setter and hitter, he helped his team earn its first National Championship.

As a coach, Syracuse has worked at the high school level at Hamburg High School and West Seneca West High School as well as at the club level with the Cheetah Volleyball Club. He has also coached at the collegiate level with the UB men's club team as a head coach and with the women's program at Niagara University as an assistant coach in 2001. While he coached the UB men's club team, his teams achieved two consecutive national Top 10 finishes. Syracuse was also the head coach of the French Men's Division III Semifinalists and an assistant coach with the Swedish Women's Elite Series National Vice-Champions.
