UB Volleyball Adds Two For 2007 Season
“We expect both of these players to make an impact immediately,” said Lodes. “I am very happy with the quality of players we are bringing in this season and if we continue to get players like these two, then there is no reason why we can’t begin to compete for Mid-American Conference Championships.” Schlegel comes to UB from nearby Lancaster, NY where she recently led Lancaster High School to its second NY State Class AA Championship as the team’s starting setter. Schlegel is also a member of the VolleyFX club volleyball team. Schlegel is a four-time first team All-New York State member and has been the setter for the Western team in the scholastic division of the Empire State Games. That Western team has won the last three gold medals. Individually, the awards continue for Schlegel. She was listed as one of the Top 79 sophomores by Prepvolleyball.com and honored by them again during her senior season. She was one of 27 student-athletes nominated for Senior Player of the Year and a finalist for the Andi Collins Award, which goes to the nation’s best setter. “Lindsey is a natural leader and an extremely hard worker in everything she does,” said Lodes. “Her style of play is exactly the mold that we were looking for in the setter we want to run our system.” “It is also nice to keep some of the best local talent at home,” Lodes added. “Lindsey is comfortable playing in Western New York and she will continue to have the opportunity to do so over the next four years.” Hornbaker is the opposite of Schlegel. Coming to UB from Colorado Springs, CO, Hornbaker is UB’s fourth player from The Rocky Mountain State where she played her club ball for the Colorado Juniors. Hornbaker is a Prepvolleyball.com second team Academic All-American totaling a 4.423 GPA in high school on a 4.0 scale. Hornbaker has also led her team to the state championships, winning the Class 3A title three times. Also a Prepvolleyball.com Senior Ace, Hornbaker’s school finished 41st in the nation out of 715 ranked schools from across the country. Schlegel’s high school finished 106th on the list. Hornbaker will begin by playing the outside hitter position, but her versatility will allow her to see time on the right side, as a middle blocker and perhaps even as a backup setter should she be needed. “Marisa is determined and works hard whether it is in the gym or in the classroom,” said Lodes. “She brings a lot of versatility to this program, seeing as she can play anywhere on the floor. She has a commitment to succeed in everything she does and that is something we really like about her.” These two players will help fill the void left by three seniors, one that was the team’s starting setter last season and the other two were both the starters at the outside hitter position. The Bulls will look to improve on a 2006 campaign that saw them go 14-20 and 3-14 in conference play.
