Amherst native retires from coaching after season finale versus Eastern MichiganBUFFALO, NY - Bob Maxwell, the all-time winningest coach in University at Buffalo volleyball history, announced his retirement following the conclusion of the Bulls' season on Saturday versus Eastern Michigan. Maxwell has coached Buffalo's volleyball team for the past 18 seasons making him the senior member of the UB coaching staff. He concludes his outstanding tenure with a won-loss record of 409-285-8, winning his historic 400th match early in the 1998 season. He will remain with the University as the Coordinator of Facilities for the Division of Athletics. The search for a successor will begin immediately according to Bob Arkeilpane, Interim Director of Athletics. Maxwell's 1998 team finished 10-23 on the season, only his fifth losing season in his outstanding career. He earned Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year honors last season and his 1986 team was 52-6, the most victories by any team at all divisions that season, and earned a #5 ranking in the nation. His 1989 and 1990 teams earned #1 regional rankings in the Northeast and Atlantic regions, respectively. His 409 wins ranks him among the top 30 all-time among active Division I coaches. In addition to his coaching accomplishments, Maxwell served as the chair for the volleyball competition of the World University Games. He has also been instrumental in bringing some of the finest high school, regional and national competitions to Western New York allowing Alumni Arena to serve as a showcase for the sport of volleyball. Maxwell, a 1979 graduate of UB, has also served as an instructor for the University and is a native of Amherst. |
