Doubles Team Remains Alive at Regional Tournament

Women's tennis duo of Denise Harijanto and Diana Popescu reach quarterfinals

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The University at Buffalo doubles entry of junior Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) and sophomore Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) advanced late Sunday to the quarterfinals of the ITA East Region Championships at the University of Pennsylvania.

Harijanto and Popescu scored a 9-7 win over Erin Clark and Pamela Duran of the University of Richmond to move into the quarterfinal round. The UB duo will next face the sister combination of Bianca and Carissa Aboubakare of Brown.

UB's remaining singles entries bowed out as Harijanto won her second-round match but was defeated in the third round. Harijanto defeated Boston University's Francine Whu, 6-3, 6-0 in the second round. The UB junior fell in the third round to Virginia's Jennifer Stevens, the number five seed, by a 6-4, 6-4 count.

Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorge, Romania/Economic) was eliminated from singles play in the second round as she lost to Maryland's Karin Lundmark, 6-2, 6-2.

Play concludes Tuesday.
