Harijanto and Stan Advance in Singles Play at ITA Regionals

Play continues at regional tournament

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Two of the three University at Buffalo women’s entries in the singles draw of the ITA Eastern Regional Championships advanced to the second round as play continued at the University of Pennsylvania.

Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorge, Romania/Economic) advanced into the second round following opening round wins.

Harijanto defeated Julia Prantel of Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-3, 6-2, to set up a second-round match with Francine Whu of Boston University.

Stan knocked off Manuela Marin-Salcedo of St. Bonaventure, 7-5, 7-5. Stan advanced to take on Karin Lundmark of Maryland.

Both Harijanto and Stan won two qualifying round matches on Friday to make the main draw.

UB’s other singles entrant, Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) was defeated in her opening match by Lauren Bates of Binghamton in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

Play continues through Tuesday.
