Novaceanu Eliminated in ITA Tourney
PHILADELPHIA, PA - University at Buffalo freshman women's tennis player Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) was eliminated from the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Eastern Regional Tournament on Sunday in the second round. Novaceanu fell to fifth-seeded Olga Borisova of Virginia Commonwealth in three sets. Novaceanu dropped the first set by a 7-5 score but rallied to force the tiebreaking set with a 6-4 win in the second set. However, the freshman's first appearance at the regional tournament was stopped when Borisova won the final set, 6-3. Borisova, who had earned a bye in the first round, later won a three-set match over Harvard's Eva Wang to move into Monday's quarterfinals against Pennsylvania's Julia Koulbitskaya. Novaceanu reached the second round following a come-from-behind three-set win over Syracuse's Victoria Vayneberg on Saturday, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. Earlier in the tournament, UB's doubles tandem of Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) were defeated in first round play by top seeded Megan Muth and Amy Wei of William & Mary, 8-2. The Bulls are back in action next weekend at the Dartmouth Invitational.
