Bulls Find Great Success at ITA Regional Tournament

The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team sent three players to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s regional tournament at Dartmouth University in Hanover, NH. Senior Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) and freshman Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) represented the Bulls in doubles play while junior Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) played singles, reaching the quarterfinal round.

Andreea Novaceanu reached the quarterfinal round of the tournament, the farthest that any UB tennis player, men’s or women’s had advanced in the prestigious tournament. Novaceanu did not advance past the second round in either of her two previous tournament appearances.

She was one of two unseeded players to reach the quarterfinal round. After earning a first-round bye in the tournament, she defeated Kim Weltman of Albany, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round and ninth-seeded Lynzee Kever of Marshall, 7-6 (3), 6-2, in the third round. The run ended when she fell to Princeton’s Melissa Saiontz, the tournament’s seventh seed, 6-0, 7-5, in the round of 16. Novaceanu’s two wins in the tournament tied her with Nenova for second place on the all-time singles victories list with 55.

Meanwhile in doubles play, Nenova became the school's all-time winningest doubles individual as she registered her 60th win in her career, surpassing the mark of 59 set by Kristen Ortman (2002-06).

Paired with freshman teammate Harijanto, the duo defeated Dartmouth's Jesse Adler and Kerry Snow in the first round of the tournament, 8-4. The pair were bounced out of the tournament following an 8-4 loss to third-seeded Marianne Baker and Eleanor Peters of Maryland. Nenova and Harijanto lead all doubles duos for the Bulls through the fall season with a 9-4 record. ??
