The University at Buffalo sent three players to the ITA East Regional Tournament over the weekend at the United States Military Academy. Sophomore Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) represented the Bulls in the 128-player singles draw while senior Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and sophomore Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) combined to form UB's doubles combination in the meet.

Novaceanu Opens With Win, Falls in Second Round

Novaceanu opened the singles draw with a first-round victory. In her opening match, she breezed past Gina Sabatino of Boston University, 6-4, 6-2. Novaceanu then moved into the second round (the round of 64) but fell in three sets to Lauren Cash of William and Mary. Novaceanu defeated Cash in a first-set tiebreaker, 7-5, to take the opening set, 7-6, but fell in the final two sets, 6-2, 6-1, to be eliminated from the competition.

Meanwhile, Ortman and Dean were bounced out of the doubles tournament in the first round. The UB combo forced extra play against Alex Seaton and Lillen Vo of Colgate but dropped the pro-set match, 9-7. Sixty-four doubles teams made up the field.

More Tournament Play Slated to End Fall Schedule

UB completes the fall season with the three-day Dartmouth Invitational starting on October 29. At last year's tournament, Novaceanu compiled a perfect 5-0 record to win the B Flight title. Ortman and Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) competed in the A Flight, recording 1-1 marks, while Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) went 1-2 in the B Flight.
