PHILADELPHIA, PA – University at Buffalo freshman Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) scored a three-set victory in her opening match at the 2004 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Eastern Regional Championships in Philadelphia.

After dropping the first set against Syracuse’s Victoria Vayneberg, 6-2, to open the match, Novaceanu scored victories in the second and third sets to advance. Novaceanu posted a 6-4 win in the second set and iced the match with a 6-0 win in the third set. She moved on to face fifth-seeded Olga Borisova of Virginia Commonwealth in the second round.

UB’s doubles duo of Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) and Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) ended up with a difficult draw in the tournament. The top UB doubles combination faced the tournament’s top seed, William & Mary’s Megan Muth and Amy Wei. The Tribe pair proved to be too much for the Bulls as they handed Ortman and Nenova an 8-2 decision to eliminate UB from the main draw.

Competition continues through Tuesday.
