Bulls Women's Tennis Falls To Albany, 7-0

Bulls Drop Final Competition of the Season

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis program dropped a non-conference road match Sunday to the University of Albany. Albany defeated UB 7-0 in the Bulls final competition this fall season.

"Despite the team's record, the players are much further along," said Head Coach Kathy Twist. "Progress is evident on the court, now they just need to overcome the mental obstacles."

Albany swept UB in the singles and doubles competition.

The first-doubles duo of sophomore Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) and junior Nicole Sargent (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) were defeated 8-6 by Violeta Petyevic and Erinn Langford after holding a 4-1 advantage. At second doubles, Jennifer Hahn and Ilissa Strolovitz defeated juniors Shani Amarasinghe (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) and Anne Schule (Snyder, NY/Amherst), 8-3. Junior Allison Heubusch (Tonawanda, NY/Tondawanda) and sophomore Jill Howell (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) were shutout 8-0 by Lori Barsel and Kristen Harris of Albany at third doubles.

In singles play, UB did not have much more success. Maynard held a 5-4 lead in the first set of her first-singles matchup, but was forced to resign due to pain in her wrist. Playing second singles, Sargent fell 6-3, 6-0, to Barsel. At third singles, Amarasinghe lost to Erinn Langford 6-3, 6-2. Juniors Schule, Heubusch and Meaghan Partelow (Lyons, NY/Lyons) all suffered straight-set defeats. Heubusch's match at sixth singles was her first singles play this season.

"This was a good indicator of how much work we need to do between now and the spring," said Twist. "We are noticing alot of improvement each week."

The Bulls are now done for the season. They resume competition on Feb. 16, 2001 at 5 p.m. when they face Canisius College at the Village Glen Tennis Center.
