NORFOLK, VA - The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team completed its fall season this past weekend as four UB student-athletes represented the Bulls in both singles and doubles play at the ITA Regionals on the campus of Old Dominion University.

In the doubles portion, seniors Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) and Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) were put in the doubles qualifying round. After receiving a bye in the opening round, Jacob and Novaceanu fell in a tight 8-6 match to Sarah Lederhandler and Jessie Rhee of Yale. In the main doubles draw, sophomore Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) and freshman Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) were paired up against the top ranked team in the East as they dropped an 8-0 decision to Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic of William and Mary.

In singles play, Harijanto cruised through her qualifying matches to reach the main draw as she started the tournament with a 6-3,6-2 win over Katharine Attwell of Boston College. Harijanto followed that up with a victory over Anne Houghton of Army, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4, to move her into the main draw. In her first match in the main draw, Harijanto took both sets 6-0 against Caitlin White of Towson before falling to Janet Kim of Yale, who was the tenth-ranked singles player in the tournament. Kim took the match, 6-4, 6-2.

Novaceanu, who took a number 18 ranking into the tournament, received a bye in the opening round and then defeated Denise Liebschner of Seton Hall, 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the round of 32. In that round she was paired up against Inga Beermann of Virginia Tech, who was ranked 12th in the tournament. Novaceanu took the first set, 6-1, but Beermann was able to take the second set, 7-5, and the third, 6-0.

The ITA Regionals capped off another outstanding fall season for the UB tennis team, one that saw them capture many individual titles during the last two months. UB will return to action in February as it begins its spring season.
