Women's Tennis Downs California (PA), 6-1

Bulls ride five-match win streak to complete fall season at 5-1

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo's women's tennis team won its fifth consecutive dual match Friday afternoon with a 6-1 win over California (PA) at the Village Glen Tennis and Fitness Club. With the win, the Bulls complete their fall season with a 5-1 record.

UB opened by taking two of the three doubles matches. Michelle Kollarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic) and Helen Lynch (Hobart, Tasmania/St. Michael's Collegiate) breezed past Sharon Kamrouz and Catalina Martinez, 8-1, at number two. The Bulls then clinched the point as number one duo Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) and Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat Linda Escobedo and Olga Gonzalez, 8-5. UB's third doubles team of Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) then dropped their match, 8-4, to Renee James and Daniella Zevallos.

The Bulls clinched the match by taking five of the six singles battles. Maynard again rallied to defeat Escobedo. After dropping the first set, 6-2, Maynard regained the momentum and tied the match with a 6-3 win in the second set. She then took the tiebreaker, 10-6, to claim the victory.

The remainder of the Bulls' singles wins were in straight sets. Ortman, at number two, defeated Martinez, 6-1, 6-3. Kollarova downed Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-1, at number three. Lynch beat James, 6-2, 6-0, to take the number four match. At number five, Wittman defeated Kamrouz, 6-1, 6-4. The sixth singles match, played in an eight-game pro-set format, was won by California's Zevallos,who defeated UB's Wendy Rose (Eden, NY/Eden), 8-5.

With the fall season now complete, the Bulls will take the next few months away from the court. UB's next match is February 22 at Rochester.
