Women's Tennis Falls To Youngstown State University, 7-0BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis program dropped a non-conference match Sunday to Youngstown State at the UB Tennis Center. YSU defeated UB, 7-0 in the final home competition for UB this season. "Youngstown is a tough team," said Head Coach Kathy Twist. "The scores are not indicative of the way we played today." Youngstown swept UB in the singles competition. Sophomore Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) played a tough match at first singles, losing 6-2, 6-4 to Abby Vens. At second singles, junior Nicole Sargent (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) lost to Leslie Banks 6-1, 6-3. Juniors Shani Amarasinghe (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford), Anne Schule (Snyder, NY/Amherst), Kendra Pyke (Watertown, NY/Watertown) and Meaghan Partelow (Lyons, NY/Lyons) all suffered straight-set defeats. In doubles competition, the Bulls did not fare much better. The first-doubles duo of Maynard and Sargent were defeated 8-4 by Vens and Banks. At second doubles, JennyVodhannel and Marci Ross defeated Schule and Pyke, 8-1. Juniors Allison Heubusch (Tonawanda, NY/Tondawanda) and Amarasinghe were defeated 8-3 by Annie Marino and Allyson Finnamore at third doubles. "It was good to see some improvement, but there still is more to be made," said Twist. "As long as we keep improving week by week, we are going to get more competitive." The Bulls head to Albany, NY next weekend for their final competition of the season.
