Harijanto And Stan Both Win Titles At Can-Am

In the Flight “A” final, sophomore Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) took the title with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over freshman Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza). The loss for Popescu was her first in a UB uniform as she took home titles in each of the first two tournaments this year.

Smaranda Stan

In the Flight “B” final, Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) defeated Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC), 6-0, 6-1 as Stan continued her stellar fall season. Jacob had an outstanding tournament as well as she combined with senior Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) to win the Flight “A” doubles crown.

The success that the Bulls have found during the first three tournaments this year will be put to the test at the upcoming ITA regionals. For the first time, UB will send four student-athletes to the regionals and they will represent Buffalo in both singles and doubles play.

Novaceanu has already secured a spot in the singles main draw and she will look to be joined by teammates Harijanto and Popescu. Harijanto will have a chance to qualify for the main draw in singles play, while Popescu, who is only a freshman, was named a qualifying alternate. Popescu is guaranteed a shot at playing at the ITA’s as she will be paired up with Harijanto in the main draw for doubles play. The doubles team of Novaceanu and Jacob will have the chance to qualify for the main draw in doubles play.

The ITA East Regionals will take place at Old Dominion University from Oct. 19 through Oct. 23.
