Bulls 2-0 After 7-0 Win Over The Golden Griffins

BUFFALO, NY- The University at Buffalo women's tennis program remained undefeated after claiming its second victory of the season with a win over the Golden Griffins on Wednesday, October 10 at the UB Tennis Center.

Buffalo started strong with a win at first-doubles by sophomore Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/ Cheektowaga) and senior Anne Schule (Snyder, NY/Amherst) over Anne Nguyen and Cori Newhouse, 8-4.

"Anne and Lisa were new to playing first singles," said Head Coach Kathy Twist. "They proved to be up to the challenge."

At second doubles, freshmen duo Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Wendy Rose (Eden, NY/Eden) defeated Andrea Meyer and Miranda Gasbarro, 8-1. Senior Kristin Karlinski (Lancaster, NY/Villa Maria Academy) and freshman Ann-Marie Mills (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) defeated Alesha White and Cara Fahey at second doubles, 8-4.

"I was proud of the way our freshmen played," said Twist. "They showed great poise and maturity."

Buffalo continued to dominate at singles. Freshman Michaela Kollarova (Slovak Republic/Bratislava) shut out Nguyen 6-0, 6-0 at first singles. Junior Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) defeated Newhouse at second singles, 6-1, 6-3. At third singles, senior Shani Amarasinghe (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) beat Meyer, 6-0, 6-1.

"The team knew not to depend on each other for the win," said Twist. "They went out and took care of business individually."

Senior Jennifer Wong (Penfield, NY/Penfield) defeated Gasbarro at forth singles, 6-3, 6-1. Senior Meaghan Partelow (Lyons, NY/Lyons) won her fifth singles match against Kristina Kaminskaya, 6-0, 6-2. At sixth singles, freshman Erica Zielinski (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) shut out her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

"Everybody played well today," said Twist. "This win will take us into the toughest part of our fall season."

The Bulls will travel to St. Bonaventure to take on Marist at 2 p.m. on October 13.
