Kollarova Takes Singles Title

Freshman Wins New York State Championship

BINGHAMTON, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team continued competition in its 2001-02 season last weekend at the New York State Women's Collegiate Championship. The two-day event was a no-repeat tournament.

Freshman Michaela Kollarova (Slovak Republic/Bratislava) took the second singles championship title. Kollarova advanced to the second round following a default by Hofstra's Allison Kelley. In the second round, Kollarova defeated Adelphi's Tashi Sharma, 6-2, 6-4. Kollarova defeated Ilissa Strolovitz from Albany, 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals and won the second singles championship with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Dowling's Jackie Legnon.

"This match was played under very cold and windy conditions, however Michaela was able to overcome all distractions and focus on the game," said head coach Kathy Twist. " She showed great determination and shot selection. She played like a seasoned veteran."

Freshman Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) was defeated by Legnon in the quarter-finals, 6-1, 7-5. Seniors Shani Amarasinghe (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) and Jennifer Wong (Penfield, NY/Penfield) defeated Dowling's Dana Rich and Kristina Fliz in the first round of the doubles draw, 8-5. They advanced to the semifinals following a default and were defeated by Binghamton University's Amy Weissberg and Alexis Brill, 8-5.

"Our seniors, Jen Wong and Shani Amarasinghe, also had a great tournament," said Twist. "They had a tough first round match against Dowling. They had better strategy and communication than their opponents and this made the difference in the match."

The Bulls will be playing Canisius at 3 pm on Wednesday, October 10 at the UB Tennis Center.
