BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team battled some inclement weather this morning, but the sun came out just in time to see the Bulls capture three more titles this fall with two more to be decided early this upcoming week.

The Bulls were able to sweep the doubles competition as the team of Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and Janelle Jones-Mitchell (Rochester, NY/ Bishop Kearney) took the Flight “B” doubles title, doing so in a forfeit by York College. In the Flight “A” doubles competition, the veteran team of Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) defeated the youthful duo of Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) and freshman Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza), 8-7 (7-5).

The Bulls continued to roll in singles competition as Jones-Mitchell took the individual title in Flight “C” as she won her finals match 7-5, 6-4. In Flight “B”, Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic) defeated her competitor, 6-3, 6-0 and Jacob defeated her opponent, 6-0, 6-0 to set up a final that will be played on Tuesday afternoon. The Flight “A” finals will also be played on Tuesday as Harijanto reached the final after her competitor from Niagara was forced to retire early in the match. With her finals berth locked up, Harijanto watched on as Novaceanu and Popescu played each other in the semifinals. Novaceanu took the first set 6-3, but Popescu fought back to take the second set 6-4 and the tiebreaker at 10-6 as the freshman secured her spot in the finals.

Following Tuesday’s two finals matches, the Bulls will return to action on Oct. 18 for the ITA Regionals in Norfolk, VA. That competition will serve as their final meet during the fall portion of the schedule.
