Bulls Blank Golden Griffins, 7-0

UB women's tennis team eclipses last year's victory total with win over Canisius

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team swept Saturday's match at the UB Tennis Center over crosstown rival Canisius College by a 7-0 score to give the Bulls a 3-1 record thus far in the 2002-03 season and better last season's mark of two victories.

Strong cross winds wreaked havoc on the players all morning but did not deter the Bulls who did not drop a set to the visiting Golden Griffins and allowed Canisius just six singles game victories. The Bulls were also playing without top seed Karen Maynard (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill), who sat out the match due to a deltoid strain in her right arm. With Maynard out, the Bulls moved each player up a spot to complete the lineup.

Three Bulls singles victories were by identical 6-0, 6-0 whitewashings. Freshman Helen Lynch (Hobart, Tasmania/St. Michael's Collegiate) at number three, junior Lisa Wittman (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) at number four and sophomore Wendy Rose (Eden, NY/Eden) at number five scored "double-bagel" victories on the day. Number two player Michelle Kollarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic/Sport Gymnasium) and number six Sheri Ugowski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) picked up 6-1, 6-0 victories in their respective matches. Freshman Kristen Ortman (Amherst, NY/Amherst) registered a 6-1, 6-3 win at number one to complete the singles sweep. UB also swept the doubles competition to earn the one doubles point.

UB heads to Ohio for next weekend's matches at Cleveland State on Saturday and at Youngstown State on Sunday. Both matches are 10:00 am starts.
