Bulls Nearly Flawless at Niagara Regional Tourney
The Bulls completed a nearly flawless weekend with 24 victories in 27 matches at the Niagara Regional Tournament. St. Bonaventure, Detroit and host Niagara joined the Bulls in the hidden duals format competition. UB’s lone losses were a pair of singles defeats to St. Bonaventure on Saturday and a doubles contest against Niagara on Sunday.
Six Bulls Undefeated in Singles Play
Natalie Dean | Six UB players scored undefeated weekends in singles play with a pair of Bulls winning all three matches against their opponents and four others going 2-0. Senior Natalie Dean (Feilding, New Zealand/Palmerston North) scored a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over St. Bonaventure’s Yolanda Callaghan and added a 6-2, 6-1 win over Niagara’s Molly Matthews on Saturday. On Sunday, Dean bested Detroit’s Aneta Maricevic, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory, downing Niagara’s Jennifer Cremieux while adding straight-set wins over her St. Bonaventure and Detroit opponents.
Finishing 2-0 in singles play was senior Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect), who scored a “double-bagel” 6-0, 6-0 victory over Niagara’s Vanja Lakic. Also posting 2-0 records were senior Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg), sophomore Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorge, Romania/Economic) and freshman Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton).
Nenova and Harijanto Finish Perfect 3-0 as Doubles Duo
Miglena Nenova | UB dropped just one doubles match in nine contests over the weekend. The top UB duo consisted of Nenova and Harijanto, who completed a perfect 3-0 mark, scoring an 8-0 shutout against St. Bonaventure to highlight their play. With her three doubles conquests, Nenova is now one victory shy of tying current assistant coach Kristen Ortman’s career record of 59. Nenova also has 54 career singles wins and is inching closer to Ortman’s record of 59 in that category as well. Going into the weekend, Nenova was tied with Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) with 52, however Novaceanu sat out the weekend matches.
