Women’s Tennis Wins Eight of Nine to Complete Niagara Tournament

Bulls sweep Detroit in singles and take two of three doubles matches with Niagara

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team completed the two-day Niagara Regional Tournament on Sunday with eight wins in nine matches to finish a nearly flawless weekend.

UB swept six matches with Detroit, winning all six in straight sets. Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorge, Romania/Economic) was the only player to win a set by shutout, knocking off Detroit’s Svetlana Flankova , 6-0, 6-2. Katrin Fischer (Ternitz, Austria/Borg) and Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) picked up 6-1, 6-1 wins in their matches.

In doubles play against the Niagara, Miglena Nenova (Rousse, Bulgaria/Eurointellect) and Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) paired to defeat the Purple Eagle duo of Jennifer Cremieux and Julianne Prokopich, 8-2. Jacob and Stan also combined to defeat Sheila Dargout and Vanja Lakic, 8-6.

The Bulls completed the weekend with 24 victories in 27 matches, by far the most of any of the four teams at the two-day event. UB swept singles play on Saturday over Niagara and doubles over St. Bonaventure and Detroit. UB won four of six singles matches against St. Bonaventure.

The Bulls host St. Francis (PA) next Saturday at 10:00 am at the University Tennis Center.
