LEWISBURG, PA - The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team continued their stellar play this fall as UB claimed four championships at the Bucknell Invitational as they won titles in both singles and doubles play in competition against players from Bucknell, Duquesne, Loyola, Mount St. Mary’s, FDU, Long Island and St. Bonaventure.

In doubles play, the Bulls claimed their first title as the team of Denise Harijanto (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Diana Popescu (Alexandria, Romania/AL. I. Cuza) picked up the victory in the Flight “A” doubles. Harijanto and Popescu defeated the team of Tania Varela and Lauren Lucido from Bucknell, 8-5. In the Flight “B” doubles, the team of Diana Toia (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and freshman Jenelle Jones-Mitchell (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) reached the finals of their bracket as they won three matches in the tournament as they finished second in the flight.

In singles play, UB captured three more titles as the championship rounds of each flight had a distinct UB flavor to each of them. Senior Andreea Novaceanu (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) finished as a finalist in the Flight “A” bracket as she picked up three more victories, and is now the all-time leader in singles victories at UB. The old record was 67, which was set by Miglena Nenova who graduated last year.

The Flight “B” finals was the first all-Buffalo final as Popescu, who won her first three matches in the tournament, was paired up against senior Smaranda Stan (Stantu Gheorghe, Romania/Economic), who also won her first three matches to wind up in the final. Stan took the first set against Popescu, but the freshman took the second set and the 10-4 super-tiebreaker to remain undefeated on the year.

The Flight “C” finals was also an all-UB final as Toia met up with senior Tina Jacob (Singapore/Raffles JC) in the final. Both players won three matches to get to the final and Jacob was able to take the title with a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

In Flight “D”, Jones-Mitchell ran the table in the consolation bracket after she lost her opening match in the tournament. Jones-Mitchell won three matches in the tournament, including the consolation championship against Joanna Grossman of Bucknell.

Though the first two weekends of fall play, UB has claimed six titles between the Bucknell Invitational and the Army Invitational, which was played two weeks ago.
